How Can I Prevent This?? Empty
PostSubject: How Can I Prevent This??   How Can I Prevent This?? Icon_minitimeJanuary 21st 2011, 10:07 am

The lines to my catch can always freeze solid. Then when the car is started, pressure builds up causing so much blow by that it burns enough oil to smoke out half a block. I'll remove the can and free up the clog/drain the can and it will run okay. Then in the next couple days it will happen again. Is it possible that I don't have enough vacuum to pull all the vapors out of the hoses? There shouldn't be enough water in there to block the hose completely if it freezes.. And I don't like coming out to my car when it's warming up in the morning to see it in a huge cloud of smoke..

It's a redtop SR. I don't have that factory black seperator thing that goes between the T on the valve cover to the block, and on the front of the T, I have a hose going to a catch can. The outlet of the can goes to the rubber elbow thing between the MAF and the turbo. Is this right? I see a lot of SR catch cans are routed this way.

Anyone have an idea to prevent this? It gets really irritating having to mess with that shit every other day. Any help would be greatly appreciated

No, sir. The can inlet comes from the front of the T on the valve cover. The outlet goes to the rubber elbow between the MAF and the turbo. Should be good vacuum there, I would imagine. And at wot it wouldn't be pressurized, so it should work in theory..

I used to have the can outlet vented to atmosphere, but the breather would leak oil all over the place and make a nasty mess everywhere.

have you tried removing the catch can system to see if that is actually your problem?

I could have lost compression.. But that would cause the can to be full of oil, right? It's usually mostly water in there. I should probably check anyway. Would a bad PCV cause problems like this?

And would eliminating the can cause any issues?

Yeah same here.. I was just hoping it was connected wrong or something. Looks like I need a compression tester. And probably rings... D:
