Well, I finally got the bells and whistles off of my turbo. Come to find out the damn thing has got fuckin shaft play. I called Jon (Militant Drift) and he said thats normal for a ball bearing turbo. He said that even brand new ones have a little bit of shaft play.

This cheered me up very slightly until I asked a second opinion from another knowledgeable person and he said that ball bearing turbo DO have slight side to side play even when new but not up and down. My turbo has both.

Does anyone have anything to add to this? It's a GT2871R from garrett.

Thanks

i'm confused

when you say up and down, do you mean in and out?

if you actually mean side to side and up and down, thats normal. its a circle so if it can go one way it can go another way.

I had one with mostly up/down/side to side and an eaten turbine wheel. Worked fine oddly enough.

You can get it "rebuilt" though. For 450 they take your chra w/wheels and send you back an new chra with new wheels. I did this recently for my gt28rs. This isn't through garret btw, I'd have to find the shop name... i seem to forget it each time it comes up :p

And new ones do have some... VERY little though.

If you want to "rebuild" it.. ie: replace the chra/wheels for 450.

http://www.limitengineering.com/ is the place, ask for Chopper.

Very legit, very fast ( at least they were for me).

Cheapest option to getting back on your feet with a BB turbo, assuming it really is bad or going bad.
