| So here's the story: I have to go to traffic court Friday, and I have no idea what I am going to do. I need advice. I have one ticket for failure to yield while turning left. This is my first ticket, and I have no idea what to do. I heard its a good idea to plea guilty and ask for supervision, but I'm not sure how exactly that works. I don't think I am in any situation where I could argue my way out of this...Could anyone offer some help? | |

| also, since this is your first offence, the judge should be easy on you. but your age might be a factor that's against you since you barely had a license for a year. wear a dress shirt to court w/ tie i guess... couldnt hurt | |

| Always dress up nice (i.e. shirt and tie) when you go to court. It never hurts you, but dressing like a slob always does. | |

I got out of having to go to traffic school when i went to court the first time too... i just remembered that. It also wouldnt hurt to speak very proper when in the judges presence ie: "yes sir" "no sir"

| oh god yeah that makes a huge difference
me, being the vetteran of traffic court myself, have witnessed on many occasions some young hooligin going up to the judge and speaking in a manner upbecomming of a respectable citizen. and i must say that punishments handed down to them were on the more expencive side
the best one that i can remember was one young chap that called the judge "dude" as in "look dude i was-" and that was a far as he got before the judge rammed all the fines and punishment allowed by law down the kids mouth. something to the tune of $5000 fine plus court costs and three year suspension of the license, for failing to stop at a stop sign
i could bearly contain my laughter [which was a good thing in fact because the judge noticed and since i was next at the stand we had a little laugh about it ourselfs, which put the judge in a better mood and since i said yes sir, no sir i got off with a $10 fine and court costs for going 45mph in a 30]

+1 I always say "your honor" and "yes sir/mam" and it does make a big difference. Just suck up and they'll let you off a little easier....

| UPDATE: The other person showed up in court and I asked for a continuance for representation. I have to go back mid-January. From what I understand, if the other person doesn't show up, you're free to go? | |

| so the other person asked for continuance because they are seeking legal representation?
get a lawyer NOW
they've got something to hide, get a lawyer and have him sort the bits out

| Don't bother getting a lawyer . . Ur pleading guilty anyway . . It WAS your fault . . And it's your first offence . . So the penalty is gonna be minimum anyway . .
Getting a lawyer would just be a wast of money . . Tell the judge you don't work . . You live with your parents and they rent . .
Ur automatically eligible for a public defender . .

| yeah. its not that bad man just take everyones advice. try to look nice, come into the court room relaxed, be polite and dont get upset about anything the judge gives you. shit i got into an accident when i didnt have a liccense, no insurance and by myself. and i just got a years probation from geting my license, and a 100 dollar fine. just dont stress out about it, its not worth it. i mean you'll get your license back eventually if worst comes to worst. (which i doubt will happen) | |
